  ZANZIBAR AND PEMBA

Zanzibar means 'Land of Blacks'. It is a combination of two Arabic words, 'Zinj' which means black and 'barr' which means land. The Zanzibar Archipelago consists of 2 major islands and about another 50 smaller islands. Often, many people refer to Unguja, the main and more developed island as Zanzibar. The second largest Island is Pemba.

Stone Town, the oldest city and now the ‘capital’ of Zanzibar is a town of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and Arab-influenced houses, a reminder of Zanzibar’s history when it was occupied by the Omani Arabs. Most of the houses date back to the 19th century. Then Zanzibar was an important trading center in the Indian Ocean. Stone Town has changed little in the last two centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site by. The Stone Town Conservation Authority was formed with an express mandate, to coordinate the restoration of Stone Town to its original glory. Some buildings have already been renovated.

Away from Stone Town, Zanzibar prides itself of long white sandy beaches, with over 25 fabulous beach fronts and warm Indian Ocean Waters creating a ‘heaven on earth’ for romance and relaxation. It is the perfect get away for the holiday maker and ocean enthusiasts alike. Zanzibar guests are welcome to enjoy walks on the beach, milliard water-sports organized from the resorts and hotels and tours to Zanzibar’s numerous tourist sites while at the same time enjoying Zanzibar excellent all year weather.

To date, Zanzibar remains enigmatic in the Indian Ocean with its history of slave trade, war and strife, spice and coconut plantations and a predominantly Islamic culture and religion. Yet still life continues as it always has, still governed by the ocean and its winds, little, almost not at all changed over centuries. It is truly a ‘paradise’.

Tourist attractions in Zanzibar include visits to the Anglican Church, built in 1874 by Bishop Steer on the site of the old slave market, underground chambers where slaves were kept before sale at the market, Dr. David Livingstone’s house where he planned his explorations, the Zanzibar museum, the Sultan ’s Palace Museum, the Ithnasheri Dispensary, Jozani forest which is home to colobus monkeys. Visit Nungwi, the busiest dhow building centre in Zanzibar where one can see traditional dhow building being practiced, Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel, with its un-spoilt beach for relaxation and a wide array of waters ports including a fully equipped dive, Mangapwani Beach where you can relax and enjoy a sea food bar be que on a half day trip, Matemwe, Pwani Mchangani, Kiwengwa, Uroa, Bwejuu and Jambiani beaches.
